New Program! Renovation and Construction Technician!

New Program! Renovation and Construction Technician!

CIMT College is growing again, this time with a new diploma program!  And what's super exciting, is that this is our first program in our entirely new branch of CIMT College of Trades!  Our Ministry-approved trades program is called, “Renovation and Construction Technician.” Students will earn a diploma, five certifications, and receive hundreds of hours of hands-on experience… including actually building a multi-room house!

The first few courses take place at the Malton Campus, so you may see construction helmets and overalls on our new students on Professional Attire Day when you come for a FREE Campus Tour.  But in order to run this program effectively, CIMT College has invested in another building, specifically for… building!!  We have opened an offsite campus warehouse, affectionately called a "Build House," where construction and hands-on training will take place. Students have 50% hands-on construction and renovation training during this program, which gives them lots of experience to include on a resume!  And in the final course, called "Build a House," our students will actually construct a multi-room interior home using their own blueprint to design and plan it!  How cool is that!!??

Students begin with courses in Foundations and Blueprints and Building Codes, so they are literally beginning from the ground up!  They learn to design their blueprint in AutoCAD, and they learn how to purchase tools of the trade during the course called Tools and Shop Equipment when they take a trip to a building supplier, and learn how to open a contractor’s account.  The course in Project Management for Construction helps them understanding planning and project structure.  Then they move into Framing and Rough Carpentry, as well as receiving an introductionto Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC during the rough-in phase.  Then they start to finish the multi-room home, with courses in Drywall and Painting and Finished Carpentry.   They learn how to install carpet, tiles, and/or hardwood, as well as various Ceiling Systems to choose and install.

The exciting Build a House course is entirely hands-on.  On their last day, students take pictures to record their project, and then they learn to demolish and salvage materials for the next project.  The Build a House course provides more than two months of a practical, hands-on construction experience which will be a huge asset when they seek a job.  Another benefit of this program is that students earn five additional certifications, including First Aid and CPR, WHMIS, Health and Safety, and Working at Heights certification to meet Ministry of Labour standards.

We have hired a wonderful instructor with decades of experience in construction, and we know he is going to deliver an incredible program of trades to our students.
