Introduction to Computers and Keyboarding Skills - Introduces to computing fundamentals, internet and windows operating system.

College English - Introduces to college level English reading and writing skills to develop grammar, vocabulary and paragraph development.

Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint - Introduces to the skills, training and assessment of computing concepts and techniques to gain proficiency in word processing, spread sheet functions and impact of computing on the present day society.

Medical Terminology - Introduces to frequently used medical words and abbreviations with emphasis on spelling and pronunciation for accurate communication with patients and health care professionals.

Human Anatomy and Physiology - Introduces to the major concepts of human anatomy and physiology to recognize and describe each body part, its function and interaction with other body structures and its role in maintaining homeostasis.

Microsoft Outlook - Introduces to the basic and advanced features of outlook to manage the messages for efficient communication, maintenance of personal and business contacts, organize appointments, events and the To Do list.

Medical Office Administrative Procedures - Introduces to the practices and procedures common to a contemporary medical office such as preparing medical correspondence, medical transcription, organizing and maintaining confidential records, medical e-scheduling and billing.

Medical Transcription - Introduces to the development of proficiency in medical e-transcriptions, medical documents and reports, such as consultation & referral letters, follow up notes, diagnostic reports, pathological findings and patient records.

Microsoft Access - Introduces to using advanced tools and controls in Microsoft Access to design applications, create dialog boxes, use macros, control data entry, create custom switch boards and tailor applications for multiple users.

Medical Billing and Coding - Introduces to the rules and regulations pertaining to producing accurate billing records as outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Health, including e-scheduling, generating medical office financial reports, preparing health claims for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), Reciprocal Medical Billing (RMB), Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) and private practice.

Medical Record Management - Introduces to the production of error free medical documents from dictation or from hand written materials along with the medical/legal implications resulting from inaccurately produced medical documentation.

Professional Skills - Prepares students with every aspect of their transition into their new career by identifying and teaching essential business and interpersonal skills.  Students receive in class lectures, as well as a private one-on-one appointment with a Career Services specialist to perfect their resume package and interviewing skills.

Health Unit Coordinating I - Designed to prepare students for work within a hospital unit.  Students learn about hospital departments and hierarchy and how to communicate with and assist in the treatment of Canadians.

Health Unit Coordinating II - Continues to prepare students for work within a hospital unit.  During this course, students begin to work with hospital simulation software.

Health Unit Coordinating III - Concludes the preparation students for work within a hospital unit.  Students complete their activities with hospital simulation software. Students also delve into psychology and psychiatry to understand how psychological wellness affects treatment.

Practicum - Provides the students with an opportunity to practice their skills in a real setting. The placement will be in either a Medical Office Administration or Health Unit Coordinating role, as determined by Career Services, computer typing speed, and host availability.


Practicum

Students complete field placements of 80 hours as a part of the program. CIMT College assigns students to medical offices, clinics, hospitals, or other MOA or HUC field placements to gain hands-on experience before being awarded the diploma.


Hospital Software

In Health Unit Coordinating, students learn to work on Hospital Simulation Software: Transcribing Doctors’ Orders Admitting, Transferring, and Discharging Patients Transcribing Laboratory and DI tests

Students receive a log in for classroom and home work practice to prepare them for their career.

  • Medical Receptionists greet people coming into medical offices and other establishments, direct them to the appropriate contacts or services, provide general information in person and by phone, and may perform clerical duties and maintain front desk security and security access lists.
  • Hospital admitting clerks interview patients to obtain and process information required to provide hospital and medical services.
  • Medical and dental receptionists greet patients, schedule appointments, using manual or computerized systems, receive and record payment for services, and direct patients to appropriate areas.
  • Hospital switchboard operators operate a telephone system or switchboard to answer, screen and forward telephone calls, take messages and provide information as required, and may perform clerical duties.
  • Medical Receptionists direct customers to appropriate areas, record bookings, handle OHIP payments for medical billing and coding, receive payment, issue receipts, arrange consultation with specialists, schedule diagnostic tests, and deal with emergency situations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Job openings in the field of Medical Office Administration or Health Unit Coordinating usually seek a person who has completed college or other equivalent diplomas. Since majority of the medical offices and hospitals are now using computer software and EMR/EHR for maintaining patient records and files, the knowledge of computers is considered essential.
