Palliative Care Workshop Organized for PSW Students

May 21, 2014

Personal Support Workers at CIMT College attended an informative workshop organized by the program instructor Mrs. Ina Mehta. The workshop was facilitated by Leea Puntanen, a primary care Nurse Practitioner working for Toronto Central CCAC on the Palliative  Care Team. Leea graduated as a RN and then went in for her Master’s program in Advanced Nursing Practice. Leea has traveled and worked as a Nurse with NGO’s in various countries such as Nunavit, Africa and Saudi Arabia. She is currently planning to go to Bangladesh to work for a while.

The PSW students at CIMT were very fortunate to be able to benefit from the experience and knowledge that Leea brought into the classroom. The students who are currently studying their Palliative Care Module were able to hear firsthand how the PSW is involved and what happens when clients who are terminally ill choose to die at home. They leant of the type of care and compassion that is needed for both the client and the family, and how this can be a rich and satisfying experience for everyone, the client, family and PSW, which is normally a very distressing time. It is predicted that there will be an increasing need for the role of the PSW in the Palliative home care situation, mainly due to the huge ageing population.
