Events The students of CIMT College had the opportunity to learn more about the Employment Rights at Work through an interactive session with Mr Nehru Gunaratnam, an acclaimed speaker from The Centre for Education and Training, on December 5, 2012. The session which was attended by the Diploma students at CIMT college was highly informative and essential for the students who are preparing to enter the world of work. Mr Nehru started the session by involving all the students in finding solutions to simple questions like the minimum wages in Ontario, organization responsible for employees’ rights, Acts which protect employees etc. The session picked up pace with discussion about the employment standards, hours of work and what overtime actually means, Minimum wage laws, Breaks during the work hour and rules regarding the vacation policy. The students enjoyed listing the Public holidays and clarifying their doubts for holidays like civic holiday and family day. The speaker also elaborated on the difference and duration of the Pregnancy and Parental leave, reasonable time for giving notice for proceeding on maternity leave etc. The session drew to an end with discussion about issues related to these and distribution of informative material to the participants. The expertise of Mr Nehru in delivering the content while keeping the audience involved was worth commending. The students went back from the session feeling empowered about their rights, which they can exercise once they enter their choicest professions.
