KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS GAINED
The program is designed to develop expertise for a variety of areas of legal practice. Students learn about civil litigation, real estate law, corporate and criminal law, family law, and wills and estates. Students also develop skills with legal software applications, which aids them in their legal and business communication, as well as with document preparation and research. Students also have an introduction to accounting, to learn the role of law clerks with client trust accounts, billing accounts and invoicing, towards building or managing a financially sound legal practice. Graduates develop client service strategies and practice professional standards and ethics from the Law Society of Ontario by following their rules and guidelines.

PROGRAM OUTLINE
Computer Fundamentals and Internet: Introduces students to computing fundamentals, internet, and windows operating system.
Keyboarding Skills: Introduces skills for proper use of home row and posture to increase speed and accuracy.
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint: Introduces to the skills, training and assessment of computing concepts and techniques to gain proficiency in word processing, spread sheet functions and impact of computing on the present-day society.
Microsoft Outlook: Introduces to the basic and advanced features of outlook to manage the messages for efficient communication, maintenance of personal and business contacts, organize appointments, events and the To Do list.
English I: Introduces to college level English reading and writing skills to develop grammar, vocabulary and paragraph development.
Professional Skills: Prepares students with every aspect of their transition into their new career by identifying and teaching essential business and interpersonal skills. Students receive in-class lectures, as well as a private one-on-one appointment with a Career Services specialist to perfect their resume package and interviewing skills.
Legal Office Procedures: Introduces to the basic legal concepts and the various fields of the law and outlines the preparation of documents commonly used in these fields.
Corporate and Business Law I: Introduces to the application of law to real life business situations. It includes study of courts and procedures, contracts, formation, performance and termination of contracts, breach of contract and remedies thereof, warranties and product liabilities.
Civil Litigation Practice and Procedures: Introduces to all aspects of civil procedure and provides a useful pan-Canadian comparison of legislation and court rules from various jurisdictions.
Real Estate Law: Introduces to all the facets inherent in real estate and real estate closings.
Criminal Law: Introduces to the principles of Criminal Law and the offences under the Canadian Criminal Code.
Wills and Estates: Introduces to documentation and tax handling strategies for estate planning, wills, power of attorney, living wills and trusts.
Legal Software Applications: Introduces students to various software used in law offices for billing and real estate closing, divorce financials, and amortizations.
Family Law and Procedures: Introduces to most of the fundamental legal issues that confront Canadian families today such as same sex marriage, spousal support, child support, post-divorce parenting arrangements and remedies available under provincial and territorial law.
Legal and Business Communication: Students will learn legal writing techniques required to work in the legal field and will learn to draft various documents that include letters, memorandums, legal correspondence, and pleadings. Students will develop an understanding of the importance of proper writing skills and develop an appreciation for spelling, legal terminology, and presentation techniques.
Law Clerk Research and Writing: Sources like e-laws and CanLII will be explored. Students will draft legal memorandum and learn how to research relevant statutes, regulations, and cases for the purpose of creating a book of authorities or other similar supporting materials.
Accounting for Law Clerks: In this course, students will explore typical billing and record keeping procedures and requirements for handling a typical client legal matter. Students will examine the Law Society Bookkeeping Guide and will explore core features of PCLaw using simple to complex scenarios and exercises.
Practice Management for Law Clerks: Practice Management and operation of a small legal business in Ontario will be explored. Students learn about how to follow the rules of conduct regarding their practice and obligations as supervising law clerk.
Practicum Placement: The practicum provides the student with an opportunity to incorporate classroom theory into a real work situation. It allows the student a chance at meaningful work experience to demonstrate and refine skills needed by a professional in a Law Clerk environment. Field placement enables learners to better understand the dynamics of the industry increase their knowledge of industry practices and provides a competitive advantage of experience in the job market.

Law Clerk is a program that opens the doors to employment in an ever-growing industry. Students who are skilled in document creation and legal research, as well as client service, will be hired quickly to join the workforce at legal firms. Law Clerks prepare legal documents and conduct research to assist lawyers or other professionals. Law Clerks are employed by law firms and legal departments throughout the public and private sectors.

JOB FUNCTIONS
Law Clerks perform some or all of the following duties:
- Assist lawyers by interviewing clients, witnesses and other related parties, assembling documentary evidence, preparing trial briefs, and arranging for trials
- Assist lawyers in preparation for mediation and judicial dispute resolutions
- Under the supervision of a lawyer, prepare wills, real estate transactions and other legal documents, court reports and affidavits
- Research records, court files and other legal documents
- Draft legal correspondence and perform general office and clerical duties
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Job openings in the field of Law Clerk usually seek a person who has completed college or other equivalent diplomas. Employers are looking for language skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal directions, speak and listen effectively. Students should have planning and organizing skills and be able to work well with others. Law Clerks should have in-house training from a law firm or other legal establishment. Law Clerks require knowledge of legal principles and procedures usually obtained through industry-sponsored courses and through experience, or through completion of a college program.

The Law Clerk diploma program develops skills which provide you with the opportunity of employment in any legal office, government agency, law firm, paralegal office, or multi-discipline legal practice setting. The most common employment opportunities arise in Law Firms; however, many large corporations also have in-house counsel which employs law clerks.
