Basic Health Assessment

This course will be a review of health assessment using a systematic approach and will include how to do a head to toe assessment. Basic Physical Assessment is a comprehensive course that has classroom component. The course focuses on accurate techniques and performance of inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation, and history taking. The principles in understanding the theoretical foundation of the anatomy and physiology of essential body systems as well as analyzing and interpreting diagnostic tests will be explored.

PRE-REQUISITES:
Students must be Registered Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses or other healthcare professions, which include physical assessment in their scope of practice.

  • Knowledge, understanding and differentiation between normal and abnormal physical findings.
  • Components of a complete health assessment; including the equipment and skills required to perform a complete health assessment;
  • Identification of developmental and cultural considerations in various aspects of a health assessment.
  • Document a complete health history with a healthy adult volunteer.
  • Adaptation of the techniques of health assessment for children and older adults;
  • Identify the relationship between health assessment and the practical practise.
