Ontario government's Better Jobs Ontario (BJO) program is a cost-sharing grant that helps laid-off workers, low income individuals, and those on Ontario Works (OW) or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) access skills training. These skills are developed for jobs that are currently in demand and expected to remain in demand in the future.

In August 2025, the Ontario government announced an additional $50 million investment in the BJO program to expand access to vocational and skills training for in-demand jobs (Government of Ontario, 2025).

The Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) grants each qualified student up to a maximum of $28,000 for up to 12 months and up to $35,000 for programs that are more than 1 year in duration. The costs this funding can cover include:

tuition
books
other instructional costs, including student fees, supplies and electronic devices
transportation
basic living allowance (up to $500 per week)

Additional funding may be available for:

childcare
disability-related supports
living away from home
literacy and essential skills training via the Get Set (Skills, Education and Training) program
language training

As per the MCU guidelines, the program must be no more than two years in length and should lead to a specified career path, and should allow the students to pursue one year of academic upgrading, if required.

Eligibility Criteria

If you were laid off and have not been working
If you have been laid off and are working a temporary job just to cover costs
If you have not been laid-off, but have been unemployed for 12 weeks or longer and are part of a low-income household
If you accepted any of the following forms of income assistance:
- Employment Insurance (EI)
- Ontario Works (OW)
- Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
